Credit Card Travel Insurance

Anyone that travels abroad, whether on business or pleasure, needs to ensure that they have travel insurance cover, as the cost of medical care, emergency treatment, etc. can otherwise prove extremely costly.

Comprehensive travel insurance also covers you against loss or theft of belongings, accidental damage, delays, cancellations, liability, and other things. If you are a credit card user you may find that some level of travel insurance cover is offered as part of the benefits on your card. However, you should make sure that you check exactly what this covers, as you may find that you are otherwise travelling abroad without adequate cover.

A number of credit cards, such as gold and platinum credit cards or travel rewards credit cards, offer a form of travel insurance known as travel accident insurance cover. Many cardholders make the mistake of assuming that this is a standard form of travel insurance, and they head off abroad under the assumption that they have travel insurance in place. However, it is important that you check this credit card cover, as in most cases the cover that it provides is very limited, and you could find that if an emergency arises you actually don't have any insurance cover in place.

The travel accident insurance cover that you get with most of these credit cards does not offer much in the way of coverage at all, and is certainly no substitute for comprehensive travel insurance. This credit card cover will normally only cover you if you die or are injured as a result of travelling on transportation that was booked through the credit card. So, if you are killed or injured on the flight, in a hired car, or on any other transportation that you paid for with your credit card you should receive a payout but this is all that you are covered for.

Comprehensive travel insurance cover will provide protection against many different situations, and therefore even if you have travel accident insurance cover through your credit card you should view this as additional cover rather than as your sole cover. You should therefore make sure that you also take out comprehensive travel insurance cover in the usual way based on your needs and your circumstances.

You will find that there are many different types and levels of travel insurance cover available, and this includes cover for families and groups, as well as singles and couples. You an also opt to take out annual trip cover if you travel regularly to save you time and money, or you can take single trip cover if you don’t tend to travel abroad very often. You can easily compare different travel insurance policies using the Internet, as there are a number of providers offering this type of cover, including those that offer cover for pensioners, although cover for older travellers can be far more expensive.

When you take out your comprehensive travel insurance you need to make sure that you check the small print and the policy so that you know exactly what you are covered for. You will then be able to ensure that you have the right cover for your needs and circumstances so that you don’t find yourself in hot water in the event of an emergency whilst abroad.
