Barclays joins the green gang with new credit card

With an increasing number of companies offering green products for environmentally conscious consumers, Barclays is the latest company to join this trend, offering a green product and a range of promises that are dedicated to helping the environment.

A number of companies including utility providers and other finance companies have already joined this growing trend, enabling consumers to benefit from services whilst contributing to environmental causes.

The new eco-friendly card on offer from Barclays is the Barclays Breathe card, and Barclays has promised that 50% of the profits from the card will be donated to projects that are aimed at reducing carbon emissions. The standard variable rate on the card will be 14.9%, but consumers using the card to purchase green products will be entitled to enjoy discounted rates, and this also applied to green services such as using public transport.

Even the cards will be made from a more eco-friendly material than standard cards, and the account will be paperless further contributing to environmental issues. However, some experts have warned that those with high credit card balances should first focus on trying to reduce their debt with a more affordable card before switching to the green product.

The Managing Director of Moneysupermarket stated: "People with significant credit card balances that are paying high interest amounts should focus on reducing debt rather than carbon but for other consumers I am sure this will, with the right terms, prove popular."

However, for those without high credit card balances to worry about the Barclays Breathe card is an effective way to enjoy the convenience and flexibility of credit cards, a competitive interest rate, and the chance to contribute to valuable eco-friendly projects.
